Tree Sales and Planting
From Redwood SWCD's beginning in 1953, the tree program has been key in working with landowners in the battle against erosion.  Through its tree program the district has helped rural landowners establish field windbreaks, farmstead shelterbelts and living snow fences, utilizing hundreds of thousands of trees.

The district has trees and shrubs available for sale to rural landowners for planting each spring.  Inventory includes a variety of bare root and potted tree species that are typically used in conservation plantings.  In addition to the sale of trees and shrubs, the district has a tree planter to plant the trees as needed.  The district technician can assist with writing the necessary plans and with species selection for various practices.

Financial and technical assistance is available to establish a field windbreak, farmstead shelterbelt or living snow fence on cropped land through the Continuous Conservation Reserve Program (CCRP).  The practices may be eligible for incentive payments as well as establishment costs.  Additional incentives may be available Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) for establishing a living snow fence along a state highway.

Assistance to establish a farmstead shelterbelt on non-cropped acres is available through the SWCD as part of the State Cost Share Program. Rows of trees and shrubs can be planted around a building site to protect from wind and blowing snow.  Cost share covers 75% of the cost of trees, planting and weed control.
In 2006 17,500 trees were sold with the district assisting landowners to plant eleven farmstead shelterbelts, one living snow fence, three wildlife plantings and two field windbreaks.
